1. Actor or talent agent:
Now, if you wanna progress your career as an actor and get professional paid work you will, probably, need to get an actor or talent agent. Now, they help you find work and in exchange they'll take a commission for the work that they find you and depending on the agency that can vary from ten to fifteen percent of the amount that you get paid.
Now, a reminder, that it's never, never a good thing to pay an agency to take you on or join their book. You should never pay an agent. That's a big red flag for the agency being a little bit dodgy. The agent will only make money when they get you work and then now get the commission for the work that they found you.
2. Showreel:
Number two – as a professional actor you're going to want to build up your professional body of work. So, that'll involve mostly feature length movies, TV commercials and also TV series. And you wanna put all that together in a really nice package that you would call a showreel. And I really urge you not to go on and pay for a showreel. I've heard of so many bad experiences with that, you know, where the actors just aren't, you know, really represented in a right way, because it's great that you're able to pay for a showreel, but maybe you're still starting out, so the actual quality of your performances in that showreel aren't the best yet. So, work towards a showreel, don't pay for one, but instead use pieces of your work that you have done because these are actually then pieces that you've been casting, so it's actually great evidence, social proof, that someone else, another filmmakers, actually wanted you in their film or in films, so it's really good social proof, versus you haven't done anything yet but you're in these things that you've paid for, it kind of makes a casting director and the director think a little bit why have they not been in anything, ok. And that might purely just been down to the fact that you're new to acting. So, that's absolutely ok, in time you'll go to some auditions and you'll get some work and you'll start to build up your body of work, and, as you'll get an agent you'll then start to build up a more professional body of work.
3. Understanding business of the industry:
And then finally you're also need to work a lot on the business of the industry, so, understanding the film business or the entertainment industry and working on marketing yourself. Now, it is important to have an agent and they are gonna find you work, but it's not just up to them. You're still going to be very proactive in marketing yourself throughout the social media channels and also through networking and also that incorporates the branding of who you are as an actor.
So, there you have it guys, I hope that helps, I wish you all the best in your future pursuing acting as a professional. If you have any questions please let us know. We'll be more than happy to answer this and give you a hand. Until I see you next time stay safe and, from myself and the team here at Acting Classes in Perth, happy acting.
